The Colors of My Heart is a courageously told story of the life of Dr. Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, an African-American mother and wife, an accomplished Obstetrician/Gynecologist, professor and leader in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. From a life of poverty growing up in the coal patches of Pennsylvania to a successful global health strategist, her discovery of self as a black woman living in America exposes the double consciousness, micro and macro-aggressions and internal conflicts that challenges many minoritized individuals as they pursue their passion. She discusses the beauty and perils of color in the life of an African- American-in the larger society, her community , her family and within her own heart. She invites you to embrace the legacy of slavery and segregation as an indelible reality in American History.

Author's Statement

My greatest accomplishment is the completion of my memoir, Colors of My Heart: Embracing my Blackness with History, Family, Fear and Faith. In my book, I am privileged to share my life story, reflecting on how I courageously overcame a life of poverty, growing up in the coal patches of Pennsylvania to becoming a successful global health strategist (reducing maternal mortality by 50% in Guyana), an accomplished Ob/Gyn, professor and leader in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The experiences that I share as a Black woman, wife and mother of three Black boys living in America expose the double consciousness, micro and macro-aggressions, internal conflicts and challenges that many minoritized individuals face as they pursue their passion.

As a servant leader, I take pride in this accomplishment as putting these lessons on paper to be used as a resource for change makers that are intentional about understanding the African-American experience to impact progress in social justice movements. Colors of My Heart speaks to how C-suite executives and organizations can use my stories as a guide to develop informed strategies, providing inspiration, encouragement and hope for a clearer path.
